EMS and Disaster Medicine
We are currently recruiting a fellow for our EMS and Disaster Medicine fellowship program that begins July, 2011. The EMS and Disaster Medicine fellowship is designed to prepare emergency physicians to assume responsibilities as a medical director of an EMS system of any size or to accept a position as a senior leader in a disaster preparedness organization.

One of the strengths of our program is our partnership with the Houston Fire Department (HFD), the third largest fire and EMS organization in the country. The fellow will serve as an Assistant Medical Director for HFD and will fully participate in all aspects of EMS medical direction, including field response. Disaster education will come from both didactic and experiential opportunities.

The fellow has the option of a one- or two-year fellowship, with the option of pursing a Master’s degree in Public Health or clinical research. The fellow will work approximately six (eight hour) clinical shifts per month and be actively involved with our department’s educational program. For further questions, please contact Richard N. Ultrasound
We are currently recruiting a fellow for our Ultrasound fellowship program that begins July, 2011. We are the only emergency ultrasound fellowship program in Texas and for much of the mid-South. The fellowship includes didactic and hands-on training in ultrasound physics and the primary and advanced indications of emergency ultrasound.

We believe in exploring new uses for ultrasound in the emergency department. We impart a well-rounded understanding of the ultrasound literature pertinent to EM practice. Opportunities to learn advanced echocardiography with the Division of Cardiology are available as well. Preparatory training for RDMS and RDCS is a component of the fellowship.

The fellow is intricately involved in the education of second-year residents rotating on the emergency ultrasound elective. The fellow works with the director on all administrative duties, as we believe this to be an important component of the training. These include quality assurance, database management, resident and faculty education, machine maintenance, and training course coordination. The research requirement includes serving as primary investigator on at least one study and participating in the other EM ultrasound research projects.
